Willie Stratton is a tall drink of water from Halifax who sings both ballads for wide open spaces, and ripping numbers for honky tonkin' at the saloon. Joined by a rotating cast and crew of musical cronies, Willie's honky tonk revue is always fresh and exciting - and surely not to be missed!
Halifax-based alt-country artist Thomas Stajcer has made a name for himself as a studio engineer and more recently as a producer at Joel Plaskett's New Scotland Yard studio. This relationship with the experienced songwriter resulted in a co-writing session that spawned two songs for Stajcer's first album, Will I Learn To Love Again? released in 2018. The album was widely broadcast nationally and was nominated by the East Coast Music Association for Country Album of the Year. In addition to his nomination with ECMA, Stajcer has been nominated for the last two years in The Coast's Best Of Music Reader's annual surveys as Country Artist of the Year. He performs consistently as a solo act or with a 5-piece band, touring across Canada.
On 'Absinthe & Smoke', Corey Isenor moves away from the country sound of his previous albums to focus on more of a roots- rock, folk-pop sound. Over the course of the ten tracks, the Nova Scotian songwriter vigilantly explores themes of youthful disenchantment, our existential place in the modern world, the passage of time, and - of course - romance - Pigeon Row
Zakary Miller’s songs reflect on a deeply Canadian identity. Both self loathing and loving, he’s crafted a sound he calls ‘Canadiana Swing’. His band The Yodelayhee Few, is always full of musicians he feels can translate the silliness that he believes should be an important part of music. Currently working on his third and fourth albums simultaneously produced and recorded in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia; while playing everywhere he can, you’re sure to hear Zakary Miller yodelling in a town near you.
“Terra Spencer is a sparklingly intelligent writer, open-hearted, insightful and eloquent. As natural a poet as ever put pen to paper and a soul as beautiful as her melodies would imply. ” - David Francy
“Kim Barlow is a great Canadian talent. ...Barlow sets herself apart from the hordes of folk singer-songwriters by managing to combine traditional elements such as banjo and fingerpicked guitar, with more contemporary techniques and structures. Her music is often sparse, letting the imperfections of her voice shine through and create an incredibly personal listening experience. Overall, Barlow’s charmingly sincere album will appeal to more than just fans of folk music and will warm many a frozen heart.” FFWD, Calgary
"Cassie Josephine has a sweetly distinctive vocal style, slightly reminiscent of a young Nanci Griffith, if I’m not mistaken and another couple of songs, One Beautiful Song and the deeply gorgeous and eloquent title track Only Half Blue may even be written and sung in a similar style to the Grande Dame of Alt. Country Music too" (Rocking Magpie).
After growing up in Port Colborne on Lake Erie, Chris decided to give ocean views a try. Living in the Annapolis Valley has shaped his lifestyle and his songwriting. He released an album in 2010 called Bad Songs and is in the process of putting out more music as we speak (coming to an internet near you). You can catch Chris playing his own songs frequently at the Rolled Oat Cafe here in town or playing guitar/bass with other valley musicians.
Stef Nicholson shows her classic country side with Big Bad Billy, recording country songs written by her father. It has since grown into a gig touring with Thomas Stajcer last fall to receptive audiences. Zach Crawford of the Koconut Kings is featured on the song “12 Reasons”, a sad honky tonk tale of a broken heart.
Kim Lake is a singer/songwriter settled in Newport Landing, NS. Her voice and songs will take you out on the open road - on a journey through heartbreak, Northern winters, and finding your place in the world. Watch for her debut album in 2020.
The Basin Brothers are a cosmic country band from Hants County, NS whose music blends a smoky honky tonk sensibility with rural maritime charm. Brothers Devin, Chase, Tony, and Jesse play songs to bounce and brawl to, as at home in the clouds as they are in the gutter. Their debut album Country Paranoid showcases their gritty down-home sound, mixing classic twang and pedal steel with rock 'n' roll energy.
